I have missed this type of commentary either because I thought the site was discontinued or I did not receive notifications accordingly.
That said, I am getting a warning from Microsoft Edge that they are unable or unwilling to play the video clips.... I'll try Chrome but please send me any ideas of what I can do to play them accordingly...... Looking forward to additional analyses. Thanks
this is really really detailed and communicated very effectively with the video clips! some of the best writing on football tactics i've read this year.
there's often chatter about the defensive exposure caused by using converted attackers to fullbacks, what prevented that from happening to japan/do you expect teams to go down that route?
The reason those conversions cause defensive issues (in theory) tends to be the player's unfamiliarity with positioning in possession (leading them to be out of position at the time of the turnover), problems with decision-making from deeper, and a lack of skill defensively (lacking awareness, 1v1 defense, etc.). Simply put, Endo and Sugita understand the requirements of their role really well and how to leverage their superior attacking qualities without overdoing it. They've also been really alert and committed defensively. In this case, it helps that they have wide CB's behind or to the side of them, as it allows them to be more aggressive stepping out to wingers or fullbacks (they'd do the latter in the event that they need to cover for their own winger). In a back four, there is less security for such actions.
I think there will always be teams willing to go down this route, but ultimately most are limited by either not having enough attacking depth (cannot afford to put a talented attacker at fullback) or simply not having attackers who are willing or capable enough to be an FB/WB.
Tool a lot from this, will be keeping a special eye on some of what you highlight during the Norway game
Was able to see the video clips ...... Hope to see more articles .......
